Because people with diabetes are at higher than average risk for heart disease, they should always check with their doctors before undertaking vigorous exercise. Moderate-to-high intensity (not high-impact) exercises are best for people who are cleared by their doctors. For people who have been sedentary or have other medical problems, lower-intensity exercises are recommended.
Grapefruit also seems to help improve HDL (good) cholesterol levels. In a recent study, individuals who consumed fresh grapefruit or grapefruit juice before meals had a 6-8 percent increase in HDL (good) cholesterol compared with the control group, which drank water before meals. Grapefruit juice has also been shown to help lower blood pressure in people with both normal and high blood pressure.

Unfortunately, a lot of diabetes drugs don’t actually work, or work with limited success and a lot of potential side effects. Science has shown that—in terms of diabetic management—these drugs are more dangerous than anything.
Hydrogenated oils: Remove hydrogenated, rancid oils from your diet, including vegetable oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil and canola oil. Because these oils are processed, treated at very high temperatures, and combined with bleaching agents and artificial dyes, consuming them has been linked to many health concerns, including diabetes.
For those who are taking the baby-steps approach to eating better, this list is even more helpful. Not only are these power foods high in fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins and minerals, they’re also familiar and easy to find. That means you don’t have to hunt down any exotic ingredients or shop at specialty grocery stores to find foods that will help you get on track with a healthful meal plan.
Why isn’t vinegar a more widely known diabetes treatment? Because no one makes big money from selling vinegar. There are no vinegar pushers. No vinegar reps. Vinegar doesn’t make anyone enough money to even be widely talked-about in the diabetes community.
GMO foods: GMO corn, soy and canola have been linked to kidney and liver disease and may promote diabetes. I suggest removing all GMO foods and all packaged foods from your diet. Opt for products that are labeled organic or GMO-free.
With the recent launch of AMPED™ Nitro, the most frequent questions are, 1) how it compares to AMPED Power and, 2) whether you should choose it over AMPED Power. As it turns out, the two preworkout products do have differences, and the right choice for you can depend on your needs. Continue reading →
Here’s how it works: let’s say you’re having a doughnut (which I wouldn’t recommend you do, but let’s say you did). Ingesting apple cider vinegar mixed with a little water beforehand will actually reduce the blood sugar impact of that doughnut.
Medical nutrition therapy is a service provided by an RD to create personal eating plans based on your needs and likes. For people with diabetes, medical nutrition therapy has been shown to improve diabetes management. Medicare pays for medical nutrition therapy for people with diabetes. If you have insurance other than Medicare, ask if it covers medical nutrition therapy for diabetes.
Other Herbs: There are so many other herbs that are great for detoxing. Dandelion can aid in digestive health and regularity. Parsley juice is loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants and assists the liver in detoxification and helps to cleanse the kidneys. Milk thistle contains properties that promote liver health and digestive function. Stinging nettle supports the kidneys in their critical role of filtering waste from the body. Neem, which people usually recognize for its antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, can help to purify the blood and get rid of metabolic waste.
More than 150 different varieties are known, but white, red, and black quinoa are the most common types in the U.S. The tiny grains cook up quickly in about 15 minutes and are commonly served as a side dish similar to couscous or rice. The mild, nutty taste makes quinoa a good base for salads, or it can be stirred into soups.
It’s not a surprise that New Year’s resolutions tend to focus on losing weight, getting healthier, and feeling better. And like most people, you want the weight off yesterday and you want to feel better now! So, even though, deep inside, you know that the smart, sensible way to lose weight and gain more energy is by taking it slow and steady, some of those quick weight-loss plans seem pretty tempting. Maybe what’s caught your attention is a “detox” diet. What can it hurt, you ask?
This nonstarchy vegetable makes just about every superfood list, and it’s easy to see why. For starters, it has more vitamin C per 100 grams than an orange, plus it’s high in the antioxidant beta-carotene, which the body uses to make vitamin A. This dark green vegetable’s vitamin A power promotes healthy vision, teeth, bones, and skin. It is also rich in folate and fiber, all with minimal calories and carbs.
The Master Cleanse is a dangerous fad diet for anyone, but especially bad for diabetics. Burroughs’ advice is medically unsound and very dangerous. Do not change your insulin dose, and never just stop taking insulin — especially while living on a very low-calorie diet of sugar water. The master cleanse is nutrient deficient, and lacks protein, fiber and healthy fat. If you have diabetes and go on the diet, you would experience hypoglycemia, including such symptoms as dizziness, the shakes, anxiety, mood swings, fatigue, headache and hunger.

The initial problem with PCBs is just how long they can stay in our bodies – 20 to 30 years, and sometimes even longer. They act as endocrine disruptors (8), and they are known triggers of both diabetes and cancers.
Garlic: kills bacteria, fungi, and other harmful pathogens, and helps to increase intestinal microflora. Also, binds with cadmium, mercury, and lead and removes these metals from the body to prevent cancer. Aged garlic has shown to provide even better health benefits.
For most people with type 2 diabetes, weight loss also can make it easier to control blood glucose and offers a host of other health benefits. If you need to lose weight, a diabetes diet provides a well-organized, nutritious way to reach your goal safely.

For many years, soy was promoted as a food that could help lower cholesterol and improve heart disease risk factors. Recent studies have found that soy protein and isoflavone supplement pills do not have major effects on cholesterol or heart disease prevention. The American Heart Association still encourages patients to include soy foods as part of an overall heart healthy diet but does not recommend using isoflavone supplements.
Hey Linda, hang in there. You have to take one day/one hour at a time. I have found that by setting my phone alarm to go off every 2 hours, I’m reminded to eat. This has helped me eat less. Also, drink a lot of water throughout the day.
After my type 2 diabetes diagnosis in January, I began to read everything I could get my hands on about reversing the disease through diet and exercise. I watched Forks Over Knives and omitted animal products, saw a nutritionist and counted carb grams, and through it all, I drank a lot of kale.
Fats should provide 25 – 35% of daily calories. Monounsaturated (such as olive, peanut, canola oils; and avocados and nuts) and omega-3 polyunsaturated (such as fish, flaxseed oil, and walnuts) fats are the best types. Limit saturated fat (red meat, butter) to less than 7% of daily calories. Choose nonfat or low-fat dairy instead of whole milk products. Limit trans-fats (such as hydrogenated fat found in snack foods, fried foods, and commercially baked goods) to less than 1% of total calories.
According to information from the Mayo Clinic, diabetes is a disease which occurs when the body is no longer able to properly regulate its blood glucose (sugar) levels. Treatment for diabetes involves both prescription medication and regulation of dietary intake to keep blood sugar levels naturally low. While it can be difficult to reconcile the recommendations of diabetic dieting with those of many detox plans, there are nevertheless some plans which purport to achieve detoxification effects without compromising the principles of a diabetic diet.

Because they don’t require refrigeration and are highly portable, nuts are a great snack choice. One caution: Because nuts are high in calories, it’s best to portion them before eating, rather than eating them out of a bag or can. Serving sizes:

PAHs are known carcinogens (5). They can be found in coal, tar, oil and other petroleum products. They can also form on things that burn: smoke meats, cured meats, charbroiled meat, and can come from tobacco smoke.
