How will we eat going forward? Our plan is to stick to the guidelines for a couple of months, then start adding in some of the “forbidden” foods to see how they affect us. We feel so good at the moment and we’ve had such success we don’t want to change anything!

Plus, research shows that not-so-innocent sweet tooth could be doing serious damage to your health, leading to weight gain, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels and an increased risk for diabetes. In fact, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of The End of Dieting, says eating too much sugar should be considered just as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. “A diet with sugar and high glycemic index foods promotes all the leading causes of death in America,” he says. “I don’t see value in cutting out sugar for a few days and then going back to eating it, but I do see value in cutting it out permanently.”

Please Note: However, as depicted in the detox flow diagram (below), the DTD Cleanse & Detox Program goes far beyond these organs to provide a more comprehensive detox program that addresses the major detox pathways within the body.

Thank you for speaking out about “detox” diets. I agree that they are useless at best and harmful at worst. The best way for anyone in general and diabetics in particular to lose that yucky after-the-holidays feeling is to get back to a healthy diet, which can be harder to return to than jumping on some crazy “detox” bandwagon. Thanks again for your thoughts on this subject, which gets a lot of attention this time of year.

If you want to balance your blood sugar and see results quickly, then follow this diabetes eating plan as closely as possible. Focus on getting plenty of clean protein, healthy fats and fiber into every meal, which can help reverse diabetes.

Not that many diabetics realize how much juicing can help. Some experts believe juicing properly can help improve and sometimes even reverse several health conditions, including type 2 diabetes. It only makes sense, since good nutrition can in many cases prevent the onset of the disease in the first place.

While juice and soda taste great, they pack huge amounts of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. Despite juice touting healthy aspects, it’s not as healthy for you as eating fresh fruits. In addition to dropping these two beverages, another one you should consider is coffee. The caffeine in coffee may be adding to small rises in your blood sugar levels. Take the no soda (including diet), no juice, no coffee challenge throughout November and see how you feel by the end of the month. Constantly overeating the wrong kinds of foods over the years is the main risk factor for developing type II diabetes.  Overeating (or gluttony) causes insulin resistance.  These people need very large amounts of insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

Taking apple cider vinegar (ACV) has been found to help both type 1 and type 2 diabetics with blood glucose control. A 2004 study found that vinegar helps increase insulin sensitivity. The study followed subjects who drank 40 grams of ACV before meals; their post-meal glucose levels were 34% lower compared to when they didn’t drink the vinegar.

One downside of eating fish is some kinds may contain high levels of mercury, notably shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish. While children and pregnant women are advised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to avoid eating these varieties, the benefits of eating fish outweigh the potential risks for middle-aged and older men and women, as long as the amount of fish is eaten within FDA and Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. Eating a variety of seafood helps minimize the amount of mercury in your diet.
