The facts are in, the science is beyond question. Sugar in all its forms is the root cause of our obesity epidemic and most of the chronic disease sucking the life out of our citizens and our economy — and, increasingly, the rest of the world. You name it, it’s caused by sugar: heart disease, cancer, dementia, type 2 diabetes, depression, and even acne, infertility and impotence.
Lean-body salad: Toss 2 c mixed dark greens, ½ c canned garbanzo beans (rinsed well), 1 oz reduced-fat Mozzarella shredded cheese and 2 Tbsp light Italian dressing. Serve with 1 fresh peach or ½ c canned peaches (in juice or water).
Richard K. Bernstein is critical of the standard American Diabetes Association diet plan. His plan includes very limited carbohydrate intake (30 grams per day) along with frequent blood glucose monitoring, regular strenuous muscle-building exercise and, for people using insulin, frequent small insulin injections if needed. His treatment target is “near normal blood sugars” all the time.
• Use kale within five days of purchase. The longer you store it, the stronger and more bitter the flavor becomes. Wrap unwashed kale in damp paper towels in a plastic bag, and store in the vegetable crisper.
Dr. Joel Fuhrman, https://yurielkaim.com/reverse-diabetes/ of The End of Dieting, says eating too much sugar should be considered just as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. And, there’s no way I’d do that to my body… so the sugar had to go.
There may just be something to that old line, “Beans, beans, the magical fruit.” Of course, you probably know that beans are high in fiber and a good source of protein, but now there are even more reasons to include them in a diabetic diet. In a 2012 study, researchers found that eating about a cup of legumes daily resulted in better blood sugar control (for both blood glucose and A1C) and lower blood pressure.
In order to reverse diabetes naturally, remove foods like refined sugar, grains, conventional cow’s milk, alcohol, GMO foods and hydrogenated oils from your diet; incorporate healthy foods like foods high in fiber, chromium, magnesium, healthy fats and clean protein, along with foods with low glycemic loads; take supplements for diabetes; follow my diabetic eating plan; and exercise to balance blood sugar.
After my type 2 diabetes diagnosis in January, I began to read everything I could get my hands on about reversing the disease through diet and exercise. I watched Forks Over Knives and omitted animal products, saw a nutritionist and counted carb grams, and through it all, I drank a lot of kale.
I disagree. I have been detoxing as needed for over 25 years, including the Master Cleanse and have never had any adverse reactions, illnesses, weakness, fatigue, no diarrhea or vomiting, no loss of muscle, no heart issues and no problems with maintaining good glucose control. I’ve gone anywhere from 24 hours to 3 weeks and repeat at least 2-4 times a year. You just need to be in-tune with your body and be wise in your methods without trying to do things too drastic.
Hydrogenated oils: Remove hydrogenated, rancid oils from your diet, including vegetable oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil and canola oil. Because these oils are processed, treated at very high temperatures, and combined with bleaching agents and artificial dyes, consuming them has been linked to many health concerns, including diabetes.
However, if you have diabetes the process works differently: you consume calories, insulin is released in response to the increased blood sugar but your body is unable to use the insulin effectively. Your brain sees that your blood sugar is still going up, so it asks your pancreas to release more insulin. But since your body can’t use it’s insulin to convert sugars into fuel, these sugars are now stored as fat, or they float around your blood stream. None of this is good.

Just because you’re avoiding sugar doesn’t mean you need to completely eliminate carbs. Dinner is when you can add another whole-grain to your diet (unless you’re gluten-free). Whole-wheat pasta, couscous, or sweet potatoes are fine. If you are gluten-free, try cauliflower rice, spaghetti squash, or my favorite gluten-free pasta (made from brown rice… did I mention it’s my favorite?). FYI: 1-cup of cooked pasta is considered a serving.
