Artichoke: contains potent polyphenols (bioflavonoids, caffeoyl-quinic acids) that work to cleanse the liver and provide antioxidant protection while it releases accumulated toxins. Artichoke increases the production of bile in the liver to aid in the digestion of fats, which can relieve bloating, gas and other uncomfortable symptoms of indigestion. Artichoke is an excellent source of fiber, and contains magnesium, folate and Vitamin C.
One easy way to improve glycemic index is to simply replace starches and sugars with whole grains and legumes (dried peas, beans, and lentils). However, there are many factors that affect the glycemic index of foods, and maintaining a diet with low glycemic load is not straightforward.
Thanks so much for posting this and also for your encouragement throughout the cleanse. I followed it closely and I feel great! I was never a coffee drinker and usually only drink green tea. I actually swapped it out for white tea a few times to cut back on caffeine even more. The recipes were great and it gave me a chance to try new foods – yaayy fennel and quinoa! Surprisingly I lost 4 lbs, even though weight loss was not the goal. I think it was good for my metabolism, as it has been so sluggish lately. I was honestly never hungry because I ate a ton of raw veggies and kept diabetes detox I definitely feel de-toxed and cleansed! Thanks again!
On the other hand, in 1983, Richard K. Bernstein began treating people with diabetes and pre-diabetes successfully with a very low-carbohydrate diet, avoiding fruit, added sugar, and starch. Both the Pritikin approach and the Bernstein approach prescribe exercise.
A diet high in plant fibre was recommended by James Anderson. This may be understood as continuation of the work of Denis Burkitt and Hugh Trowell on dietary fibre, which may be understood as a continuation of the work of Price. It is still recommended that people with diabetes consume a diet that is high in dietary fiber.
Though it wasn’t all about the food. Stress causes inflammation, so a big part of healing yourself is to actively work on relaxation techniques. Detoxifying baths, journaling, breathing, media fasting, and exercise were all part of the plan, too. It’s also a lot easier to make better food choices after you’ve taken a few deep, calming breaths.
Make sure that you are eating raw and plant-based foods with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, e.g. green vegetables, bright-colored vegetables, whole fruit, cold-water fish, plant oils, etc.

Another study showed that supplementation of Aloe vera L. gel powder along with nutrition counseling significantly reduced blood glucose levels and blood pressure along with an improvement in lipid profile in the non-insulin dependent diabetics. (8)

Bitter melon helps lower blood glucose levels, and it regulates the body’s use of insulin. Studies show that bitter melon extract can help reduce and manage symptoms of diabetes, including insulin resistance, heart complications, kidney damage, blood vessel damage, eye disorders and hormone irregularities. There is also increasing evidence that nuts can improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. In a Canadian study published in Diabetes Care in 2011, researchers found people with type 2 diabetes who ate 2 ounces of mixed nuts daily saw a decrease in blood sugar levels and LDL (bad) cholesterol. The study was funded in part by the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research Foundation and the Almond Board of California, among other supporters.
Garlic, the edible bulb from a plant in the lily family, has served as both a medicine and flavoring agent in cooking for thousands of years. It has been used to treat high cholesterol, heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancers. So does it really work? Here is what the current science says, according to the National Institutes of Health:
Another critic of the ADA program is futurologist and transhumanist Ray Kurzweil, who with Terry Grossman co-authored Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever (published 2004). They describe the ADA guidelines as “completely ineffective”. Their observations are that the condition, particularly in its early stages, can be controlled through a diet that sharply reduces carbohydrate consumption. Their guidelines for patients with type 2 diabetes is a diet that includes a reduction of carbohydrates to one sixth of total caloric intake and elimination of high glycemic load carbohydrates. As someone who was diagnosed with diabetes but who no longer has symptoms of the disease, Kurzweil is a firm advocate of this approach. However, Kurzweil’s prescription changed somewhat between his 1993 book The 10% Solution for a Healthy Life in which he recommended that only 10% of calories should come from fat and Fantastic Voyage which recommends 25%.
Cleansing/detoxification of the kidneys can provide relief from ailments such as high blood pressure, fatigue, urinary tract infections, and kidney stones. The following is a list of the key nutrients that help to cleanse, detoxify and nourish the kidneys.

Timing. Patients with diabetes should not skip meals, particularly if they are taking insulin. Skipping meals can upset the balance between food intake and insulin and also can lead to low blood sugar and even weight gain if the patient eats extra food to offset hunger and low blood sugar levels.
Meditation: One of the parts of the body that we forget to detox is the mind! Meditation has been shown to ease depression, improve mental function, and reduce stress and anxiety. Meditation also reduces thought patterns or attachments to negative feelings that actually influence our physical chemistry.
The kidneys are important to cleansing and detoxification because they filter the blood (210 quarts a day) by eliminating toxins and waste materials from the blood, and for maintaining the electrolyte balance by selectively eliminating some electrolytes while retaining others, according to the body’s needs.
Doing different types of physical activity each week will give you the most health benefits. Mixing it up also helps reduce boredom and lower your chance of getting hurt. Try these options for physical activity.
Compared to fats and protein, carbohydrates have the greatest impact on blood sugar (glucose). Except for dietary fiber, which is not digestible, carbohydrates are eventually broken down by the body into glucose. Carbohydrate types are either complex (as in starches) or simple (as in fruits and sugars).
