After my type 2 diabetes diagnosis in January, I began to read everything I could get my hands on about reversing the disease through diet and exercise. I watched Forks Over Knives and omitted animal products, saw a nutritionist and counted carb grams, and through it all, I drank a lot of kale.
This recipe is also included in the “guiltless” category because it is virtually fat free! The use of applesauce in quick breads in lieu of oil is not only heart healthy and MUCH lower in calorie (its use saves about 60 calories per half-inch slice!), but it results in a tender, sweet quickbread.
When you eat excess calories and fat, your body responds by creating an undesirable rise in blood glucose. If blood glucose isn’t kept in check, it can lead to serious problems, such as a dangerously high blood glucose level (hyperglycemia) and long-term complications, such as nerve, kidney and heart damage.

We are all aware that sleep is essential for the overall health. Sleeping at erratic times and lack of sleep can elevate your cortisol levels. The sleep also interferes with the ghrelin and leptin levels, the hormones which control satiety and hunger.
Start by trying these first three days of the plan, and then use a combination of these foods going forward. Review the list of foods that you should be eating from Step 2, and bring those healthy, diabetes-fighting foods into your diet as well. It may seem like a major change to your diet at first, but after some time you will begin to notice the positive effects these foods are having on your body.
Drinking as little as two or three cups of fresh vegetable juice every day can help diabetics, as long as juicing is part of an overall diet that’s nutritious and healthy. Of course, the right types of produce must be juiced in order for a person with diabetes to see any benefits. For example, you may have noticed that we haven’t mentioned juicing any fruits as a way to improve diabetes.
In addition, these fat cells trigger inflammation markers that cause an immune response that, in turn, may lead to spikes in cortisol, adrenaline and blood glucose. And, in the meantime, the liver is under a tremendous strain because it’s processing the food and the medications while dealing with the problems associated with diabetes.
Based on Stanley Burroughs’ 1940s book “The Master Cleanser,” the Master Cleanse is both a detox plan and a weight loss diet. The cleanse is a modified fast that requires you to drink a lemonade-like beverage made from purified water, organic lemons, cayenne pepper and grade B maple syrup. Although Burroughs dedicated a section in “The Master Cleanser” specifically to diabetics, his advice is unsafe by current medical standards.
Popeye was right — spinach is good for you. You probably already know that it’s loaded with vitamins and minerals. A 1-cup serving of raw spinach or 1/2 cup cooked provides over 50 percent of the daily value for folate and vitamin C. At the same time, a serving of this nonstarchy vegetable is super low in calories (7) and carbohydrate (1 gram). A ½-cup cooked serving contains just 22 calories and 4 grams of carb.
All fats, good or bad, are high in calories compared to proteins and carbohydrates. In order to calculate daily fat intake, multiply the number of fat grams eaten by nine (1 fat gram provides 9 calories, whether it’s oil or fat) and divide by the number of total daily calories desired. One teaspoon of oil, butter, or other fats contains about 5 grams of fat. All fats, no matter what the source, add the same calories. The American Heart Association recommends that fats and oils have fewer than 2 grams of saturated fat per tablespoon.
Olestra (Olean) passes through the body without leaving behind any calories from fat. However, it can cause cramps and diarrhea, and even small amounts of olestra may prevent the body from absorbing certain vitamins and nutrients.
The first thing I want to share with you is Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV). It’s inexpensive, easy to use and accessible at every grocery store in America. It’s a potent natural remedy for a number of things, but is especially powerful for diabetics.
Another study showed that supplementation of Aloe vera L. gel powder along with nutrition counseling significantly reduced blood glucose levels and blood pressure along with an improvement in lipid profile in the non-insulin dependent diabetics. (8)

Further, consuming more fiber may lower the risk of a first-time stroke, according to the American Heart Association (AHA) journal Stroke. The researchers concluded that every 7-gram increase in total dietary fiber was associated with a 7 percent lower risk of a first-time stroke.
A study published in 2012 in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that consuming cheese or yogurt might help prevent type 2 diabetes. In studying the diets of thousands of adults with and without diabetes, investigators found those who ate at least 55 grams (about 2 ounces) of yogurt a day were 12 percent less likely to develop type 2. The researchers theorized that probiotic bacteria in yogurt lowers cholesterol and produces certain vitamins that prevent diabetes. They thought the vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium found in yogurt could play a role, too.
Cranberries: contain phytonutrients that help to fight urinary tract infections. Specifically, cranberries contain concentrated tannins known as proanthocyanidins that prevent Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria from adhering to walls of the urinary tract. They also contain Vitamin C, which inhibits the growth of some bacteria by acidifying the urine.

Horsetail: contains potassium and manganese along with several bioflavonoids, which cause the diuretic action, while the silicon content exerts a connective tissue strengthening and anti-arthritic action.
One serving of broccoli is 1 cup raw or 1/2 cup cooked. You can enjoy it raw with hummus or a low-calorie dressing, or use it chopped in eggs, pizzas, pastas, salads, and stir-fries. The key to great-tasting cooked broccoli: Don’t overcook it. The stem portion should be barely tender, and the broccoli should be bright green.
I just woke to start day three of this cleanse. It was easier than I thought but temptations were challenging. I even made the trip to McDonald’s and back with lunch for 2 co-workers yesterday!! The day is just starting but the scale has me down 3.5 lbs this morning!!!!!!!!! I feel great too. Now I just need to continue good habits and restart my workouts to keep this trend going!

Like spinach, kale is one of those green leafy veggies associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. In one meta-analysis of several studies, people who ate the most green leafy vegetables were 14 percent less likely to develop diabetes than those consuming the least amounts.

There has been long history of dietary treatment of diabetes mellitus. Dietary treatment of diabetes mellitus was used in Egypt since 3,500 BC and was used in India by Sushruta and Charaka more than 2000 years ago. In the 18th century, John Rollo argued that calorie restriction could reduce glycosuria in diabetes.
What is unique about quinoa is not so much its protein content (3 grams in every 1/3-cup serving), but its protein composition. It contains all nine essential amino acids (amino acids the body cannot make), making it a complete protein. “With 13 grams of carbs per serving, it also contributes folate, magnesium, manganese, iron, and vitamin B6 to your diet. It has 2 grams of fiber, and it is very low in sodium,” Crawley says. Like other whole grain, high-fiber foods, quinoa can help prevent blood sugar spikes and stave off hunger.
People with diabetes should avoid products listing more than 5 grams of sugar per serving, and some doctors recommend limiting fruit intake. You can limit your fructose intake by consuming fruits that are relatively lower in fructose (cantaloupe, grapefruit, strawberries, peaches, bananas) and avoiding added sugars such as those in sugar-sweetened beverages. Fructose is metabolized differently than other sugars and can significantly raise triglycerides.
Since carbohydrate is the macronutrient that raises blood glucose levels most significantly, the greatest debate is how low in carbohydrates the best diabetes detox should be. This is because although lowering carbohydrate intake will help reduce blood glucose levels, a low-carbohydrate diet conflicts with the traditional establishment view that carbohydrates should be the main source of calories. Recommendations of the fraction of total calories to be obtained from carbohydrate are generally in the range of 20% to 45%, but recommendations can vary as widely as from 16% to 75%.
Chelation Therapy: is one of the best ways to detox and remove heavy metals from your cells and tissues. But, it can also be dangerous, so many doctors don’t recommend it unless you have moderate to severe heavy metal poisoning. Chelation therapy uses compounds called chelators that form strong bonds with heavy metals, leaving them unable to further poison your body. Chelators mobilize the toxins, and you can either pass them normally or bind them up with adsorbents like activated charcoal. Chelation therapy is very effective for removing lead, mercury, aluminum, arsenic, iron, and copper.
