Garlic, the edible bulb from a plant in the lily family, has served as both a medicine and flavoring agent in cooking for thousands of years. It has been used to treat high cholesterol, heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancers. So does it really work? Here is what the current science says, according to the National Institutes of Health:

I welcomed the return of humanely-produced lean protein and an almost laughable amount of healthy fats — nearly 20 g per meal — which was absolutely shocking to someone who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, when fat was the enemy. Could this really produce results? I was about to find out.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of The End of Dieting, says eating too much sugar should be considered just as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. And, there’s no way I’d do that to my body… so the sugar had to go.

Very low in carbs, this salad gives you a healthy dose of omega-3’s from both salmon and olive oil. These fats help fight inflammation and protect your cells. Olive oil also improves insulin sensitivity.

Soluble fiber (found in dried beans, oat bran, barley, apples, and citrus fruits) has important benefits for the heart, particularly for achieving healthy cholesterol levels and possibly reducing blood pressure as well.

Glutathione: is a powerful antioxidant that protects you from heavy metal damage. Glutathione also supports liver enzymes that break down mold toxins and heavy metals. Unfortunately, your digestion will destroy normal glutathione, so consider using a liposomal glutathione supplement that makes it through your stomach. You can also supplement with pre-cursors such as N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), which your body can use to build glutathione on its own. 

• Steel-cut oatmeal has a dense, thick texture. It can take up to 45 minutes to cook, so some people make a batch ahead of time and warm it up for an instant breakfast. These less-processed oats are lower on the glycemic index, which may help control blood sugar.

Tuna melt: Top 1 toasted whole grain English muffin with ¼ c tuna mixed with 1 tsp mayonnaise (or 1 Tbsp light mayonnaise), 1 Tbsp minced dill pickle and/or chopped celery and 1 oz reduced-fat cheese. Place in pre-heated oven (450ºF) for 5 to 10 minutes (or microwave for 30 seconds until cheese melts).  Serve with 8 baby carrots with 2 Tbsp reduced fat ranch dressing, and 1 c fat-free milk or calcium-enriched soy beverage.

Pasta with meatballs: Toss 1 c cooked whole grain pasta in garlic and 1 Tbsp olive oil and garlic. Top with 3-oz lean meat balls (made with turkey, chicken or soy) and 1 tsp grated Parmesan cheese. Serve with cucumber salad (toss 1 c mixed greens, 1 c cucumber slices, 10 halved cherry tomatoes, ¼ c chopped red onions and 2 Tbsp reduced-fat Italian dressing).

Fortunately, the condition is reversible and personal changes are the best prescription. Watermelon: Like tomatoes, watermelon is a good source of the antioxidant lycopene, which may help protect against some cancers and cell damage associated with heart disease. The American Heart Association has certified fresh watermelon for its Heart-Check program as being low in saturated fat and cholesterol. When selecting watermelon, look for ones without bruises or dents. Store whole melons at room temperature for up to 10 days. One serving is 1-1/4 cups cubed.
