When you’re craving something sweet, make tracks to the melon aisle, where you’ll find many varieties including watermelon, cantaloupe, muskmelon, honeydew, casaba, crenshaw, Persian, and pepino. While all of these are bursting with healthy nutrients, the most common types contain some unique properties:
Like apple cider vinegar, it also reduces the blood sugar response you have to food. What’s even cooler is that with time, it actually improves your body’s sensitivity to insulin so your body doesn’t have to produce as much to get the sugar out of the blood.
Dr. Hyman’s research made sense to me, so I thought I’d give his diet a try. With little less than a month until my follow-up doctor’s appointment, I wanted to jumpstart my progress. I read his 10-Day Detox Diet, which cuts out not only the inflammation triggers of gluten, dairy, caffeine, and alcohol, but also all grains, most fruit, legumes, and starchy vegetables, to help maintain balanced blood sugar levels. I welcomed the return of humanely-produced lean protein and an almost laughable amount of healthy fats — nearly 20 g per meal — which was absolutely shocking to someone who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, when fat was the enemy. Could this really produce results? I was about to find out.
Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans are good sources of carbohydrates. Whole grain foods provide more nutritional value than pasta, white bread, and white potatoes. Brown rice is a better choice than white rice.
One gram of carbohydrates provides 4 calories. The current general recommendation is that carbohydrates should provide between 45 – 65% of the daily caloric intake. Carbohydrate intake should not fall below 130 grams/day.
Neotame (Neotame). Neotame is structurally similar to aspartame. Unlike other artificial sweeteners, neotame is not available as a table sweetener. It is only used as a general-purpose sweetener in commercial food products such as baked goods and soft drinks.

To take advantage of the many health benefits of cinnamon, add one teaspoon to food, smoothies or tea. You can also take one to two drops of cinnamon essential oil internally by adding it to food or tea, or combine three drops of cinnamon oil with half a teaspoon of coconut oil and massage it into your wrists and abdomen.
Also, make sure that you are eating sulfur-rich foods (e.g. organic eggs, fish, cruciferous vegetables, allium vegetables), because sulfur helps your cells to absorb nutrients, fight bacteria and build your connective tissues. This is especially important when you have reached “the wall” — that is, you have lowered your blood sugar, but, you can’t lower it any further or you can’t keep your blood sugar stabilized without increasing your exercise regimen.
Welcome to the diet killer. Around 3 p.m. our circadian rhythm begins falling. That’s why we feel fatigue and want some nap time. So you might as well anticipate that you’re going to want a snack and have a game plan. You can have as many veggies as you want, or a handful of nuts.
More modern history of the diabetic diet may begin with Frederick Madison Allen and Elliott Joslin, who, in the early 20th century, before insulin was discovered, recommended that people with diabetes eat only a low-calorie and nearly zero-carbohydrate diet to prevent ketoacidosis from killing them. While this approach could extend life by a limited period, patients developed a variety of other medical problems.
So do you choose green or black? According to the ADA, while green tea has been the darling in the tea world, the health benefits of green and black teas are similar, says Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., FACN, director of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. In the ADA article on tea, Mayer recommends drinking four to five cups of strong tea daily. But beware: Bottled teas don’t count, because the beneficial catechins begin degrading once tea has been brewed, and the drinks could be hiding added sugars. Also, too much ice may dilute tea and its healthy compounds. Tea has only about half the caffeine of coffee.
Also, there’s little, if any, evidence that detox diets actually do any good. Some people do report feeling better when on a detox diet and that can be attributed to drinking more water, cutting out alcohol, caffeine, fat, and sugar, and even to being in a state of starvation. When someone is starving, he often feels more energetic and euphoric.
Low Carb Diet: It has been suggested that the removal of carbohydrates from the diet and replacement with fatty foods such as nuts, seeds, meats, fish, oils, eggs, avocados, olives, and vegetables may help reverse diabetes. Fats would become the primary calorie source for the body, and complications due to insulin resistance would be minimized.
Based on Stanley Burroughs’ 1940s book “The Master Cleanser,” the Master Cleanse is both a detox plan and a weight loss diet. The cleanse is a modified fast that requires you to drink a lemonade-like beverage made from purified water, organic lemons, cayenne pepper and grade B maple syrup. Although Burroughs dedicated a section in “The Master Cleanser” specifically to diabetics, his advice is unsafe by current medical standards.
An approach that has been popular with some people with type 1 diabetes mellitus since 2000 is known as DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating). This approach involves estimating the amount of carbohydrates in a meal and modifying the amount of insulin one injects accordingly. An equivalent approach has for people with type 2 diabetes mellitus is known as DESMOND, which stands for Diabetes Education and Self-Management for On-Going and Newly Diagnosed (diabetes). DAFNE has a newsletter and has received recommendation.
Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of The End of Dieting, says eating too much sugar should be considered just as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. And, there’s no way I’d do that to my body… so the sugar had to go.
One downside of eating fish is some kinds may contain high levels of mercury, notably shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish. While children and pregnant women are advised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to avoid eating these varieties, the benefits of eating fish outweigh the potential risks for middle-aged and older men and women, as long as the amount of fish is eaten within FDA and Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. Eating a variety of seafood helps minimize the amount of mercury in your diet.
Tuna salad: Mix 3 oz water-packed tuna with 2 stalks chopped celery, 4 chopped green olives, and 1 tsp regular (or1 T reduced-fat mayonnaise). Add 1 Tbsp seasoned rice vinegar, if desired. Scoop tuna onto 2 c mixed dark greens, and top with 1 Tbsp chopped almonds. Serve with 1 oz 100% whole grain crackers.
Fat is not a four-letter word. Fat doesn’t make you fat, sugar does. Fat makes you full, balances your blood sugar and is necessary for fueling your cells. Along with protein, have good fats at every meal and snack including nuts and seeds (which also contain protein), extra virgin olive oil, coconut butter, avocados, and omega 3 fats from fish.
Patients with type 2 diabetes who take metformin (Glucophage) should be aware that this drug can interfere with vitamin B12 absorption. Calcium supplements may help counteract metformin-associated vitamin B12 deficiency.

Once your health becomes more balanced you may be able to reduce this to three hours a week. It is important to undertake a combination of cardiovascular activity, strength training and stretching. For people with high blood sugar the combination of aerobics and strength exercises is more powerful than either one alone.
