What does coconut oil and coconut milk do for someone who is cleansing. I have heard that it is a fat that the body readily recognizes…but can it still slow down the cleanse considerably depending on amounts eaten?

That depends on the particular detox diet you’re following. There are many of them. Some involve fasting, or just drinking liquids. Others allow some foods, like fruits and vegetables. They typically are short diets — they’re not a way of eating you can stick with in the long run.

These little berries pack a big nutritional punch. A 1-cup serving provides over half of the day’s vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant beneficial for bone and skin health, as well as cancer and heart disease prevention. Not only are detox diets not good for people with certain medical conditions, they could be harmful. There is no research showing they improve blood pressure or cholesterol or have a positive effect on the heart. For people with diabetes, they may be quite dangerous. Any diet that severely restricts what you eat could lead to dangerously low blood sugar if you take medicine for diabetes.

According to the World Journal of Diabetes, we are facing the epidemic of the century. The Western Pacific region has the highest number of adults diagnosed with diabetes and has countries with the highest prevalence of diabetes now at 37.5%. (4) 

Turmeric: contains essential oils and the active ingredient curcumin, which is a strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that protects the liver. Curcumin increases the secretion of bile by stimulating the bile duct. Curcumin protects the liver from detoxification, stimulating the gall bladder and scavenging free radicals. In conjunction with the adrenal glands, curcumin inhibits both platelet aggregation and the enzymes that induce inflammatory prostaglandins. Curcumin also helps to break down fats and reduce cholesterol.

If you are stressed, your hormones go crazy. Cortisol goes up which makes you hungry, causes belly fat storage and leads to type 2 diabetes. Studies show that taking deep breaths activates a special nerve, called the vagus nerve, that shifts your metabolism from fat storage to fat burning and quickly moves you out of the stress state. A word of advice: Don’t try to make too many changes all at once. Research shows that people form healthy habits more easily when attempting to take on simple actions (such as drinking more water) rather than striving to adopt elaborate routines.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, and unlike type 1 diabetes, it usually occurs in people over the age of 40, especially those who are overweight. Type 2 diabetes is caused by insulin resistance, which means that the hormone insulin is being released, but a person doesn’t respond to it appropriately. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder that’s caused by high blood sugar. The body can keep up for a period of time by producing more insulin, but over time the insulin receptor sites burn out. Eventually, diabetes can affect nearly every system in the body, impacting your energy, digestion, weight, sleep, vision and more. (5)

Drinking as little as two or three cups of fresh vegetable juice every day can help diabetics, as long as juicing is part of an overall diet that’s nutritious and healthy. Of course, the right types of produce must be juiced in order for a person with diabetes to see any benefits. For example, you may have noticed that we haven’t mentioned juicing any fruits as a way to improve diabetes.

Therefore, at your every meal you should have fat and protein. The best fats are nut butter (except peanut butter), seeds, wild-caught seafood, nuts, omega – 3 fats from eggs and meat, olive oil, avocados, palm oil and coconut oil.

It is easier for your body to absorb lycopene from cooked and processed tomatoes, such as tomato juice, than from fresh tomatoes. Also, canned products such as tomato paste, tomato sauce, and pasta sauce have approximately seven times more lycopene than raw tomatoes. Adding a bit of oil while sauteing or cooking tomatoes can aid lycopene absorption, according to Health Gourmet: Eat to Beat Diabetes (McGraw-Hill, 2006).

Prediabetes means having high blood sugar and/or insulin levels. It increases your risk for developing diabetes as well as a variety of chronic illnesses including heart disease, cancer, and dementia.

Opt for recipes with variety. Try to get a variety of vegetables on your plate, such as dark leafy greens, beets, artichokes, onions, carrots, and cucumbers. Add cooked chickpeas, avocado, brown rice, baked sweet potato, hemp seeds, extra-virgin olive oil, and other foods rich in protein, fiber, and fat. Better yet, look for recipes that combine a variety of plant-based ingredients like  Sweet Potato and Red Cabbage Slaw.

Burroughs says the Master Cleanse can be modified for diabetics by using molasses instead of maple syrup at the beginning of the diet. Burroughs says “the molasses supplies the necessary elements for the pancreas to produce insulin.” He recommends starting with small amounts of molasses, and reducing insulin intake until you are consuming 2 tbsp. of molasses in each glass, at which time Burroughs says you should be able to stop taking additional insulin altogether. Doing a 10 step sugar detox might seem extreme to some people and difficult to others. But even research says that we need to get flour and sugar out of our diet forever. You need to begin with baby steps. The first step is always the hardest, right?

The amount and type of these exchanges are based on a number of factors, including the daily exercise program, timing of insulin injections, and whether or not an individual needs to lose weight or reduce cholesterol or blood pressure levels.

Bottom Line: PAHs are incredibly dangerous to our health, in general and especially for those who have diabetes, prediabetes or are predisposed to either. If we want to lead our best life, we have to take action steps to be vigilant and cut out PAHs entirely.
