There are no hard and fast rules as to what you should include in your week-long detox diet. However, your goal should be to focus on antioxidant-packed cleansing vegetables and fruits along with high-fiber foods like whole grains, nuts, and seeds. As you build your diet around these foods, make sure to eat in moderation.

The next time you pour yourself a cup of tea, you could be doing your health a favor. Tea contains antioxidant-rich flavonoids called catechins, which seem to reduce the risk of heart disease by helping blood vessels dilate, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Broccoli is a member of the cruciferous vegetable family, which includes other veggies such as Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and bok choy. What makes this class of veggies unique is the high levels of sulfur-containing compounds known as glucosinolates. Perhaps better known for their potential anticancer effects, these compounds may also have a role in reducing heart disease risk and heart-related deaths. In a study reported in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2011, researchers found that cruciferous vegetable consumption was associated with a reduced risk of death from heart disease. Their recommendation: “Increase consumption of vegetables, particularly cruciferous vegetables and fruit, to promote cardiovascular healthy and overall longevity.”

Recent studies have found that soy protein and isoflavone supplement pills do not have major effects on cholesterol or heart disease prevention. The American Heart Association still encourages patients to include soy foods as part of an overall heart healthy diet but does not recommend using isoflavone supplements.

Also, make sure that you are eating sulfur-rich foods (e.g. organic eggs, fish, cruciferous vegetables, allium vegetables), because sulfur helps your cells to absorb nutrients, fight bacteria and build your connective tissues. Those who suffer from hypoglycemia usually improve when they adopt a similar diet as the above for diabetes, eg. eliminate refined sugars and alcohol, eat foods high in fiber (such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts) and eat small, frequent meals.  Even modest amounts of caffeine may increase symptoms of hypoglycemia. For this reason, caffeinated beverages (such as coffee, tea, and some soda pop) should be avoided.

More than 150 different varieties are known, but white, red, and black quinoa are the most common types in the U.S. The tiny grains cook up quickly in about 15 minutes and are commonly served as a side dish similar to couscous or rice. The mild, nutty taste makes quinoa a good base for salads, or it can be stirred into soups.

Aside from the financial costs of diabetes, the more frightening findings are the complications and co-existing conditions. In 2014, 7.2 million hospital discharges were reported with diabetes as a listed diagnosis. Patients with diabetes were treated for major cardiovascular diseases, ischemic heart disease, stroke, lower-extremity amputation and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Choosing foods with low glycemic index scores often has a significant effect on controlling the surge in blood sugar after meals. Many of these foods are also high in fiber and so have heart benefits as well. Substituting low- for high-glycemic index foods may also help with weight control.

You’re wise to wonder about steps to protect your liver. Diabetes raises your risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition in which excess fat builds up in your liver even if you drink little or no alcohol.

I recently subscribed to your YouTube channel. I viewed the video – how to reverse type 2 diabetes. On your website you mention independent testing centers. Can you be more specific? If it’s not a doctor’s office, then what do they look like? CVS or Target minute clinics? I think they may work for patients currently without insurance. Thanks for presenting. I’m better because I pay attention.

The American Diabetes Association in 1994 recommended that 60–70% of caloric intake should be in the form of carbohydrates. As mentioned above, this is controversial, with some researchers claiming that 40%[17] or less is better, while others claim benefits for a high-fiber, 75% carbohydrate diet.[18]

If you are stressed, your hormones go crazy. Cortisol goes up which makes you hungry, causes belly fat storage and leads to type 2 diabetes. Studies show that taking deep breaths activates a special nerve, called the vagus nerve, that shifts your metabolism from fat storage to fat burning and quickly moves you out of the stress state. And all you have to do is take a deep breath. My Take Five Breathing Break is something you can do anywhere, anytime. Simply take five slow deep breaths – in to the count of five, out to the count of five. Five times. That’s it. Do this before every meal. Watch what happens!

Based on the evidence that the incidence of diabetes is lower in vegetarians, some studies have investigated vegan interventions.[24][25][26] These studies have shown that a vegan diet may be effective in managing type 2 diabetes,[27] as long as the person loses excess weight by following the diet.[3][4] Plant-based diets tend to be higher in fiber, which slows the rate sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream. Switching people with diabetes to a vegan diet lowered hemoglobin A1C and LDL levels in one study.[citation needed]
