On the first day use a scant tablespoon of the molasses to each glass of lemonade and reduce insulin by about 10 units. Daily from then on reduce the insulin as you increase the molasses to 2 full tablespoons per glass. When this proportion has been reached the insulin can normally be eliminated; then replace the molasses with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup in each glass. Make regular checks of the sugar level in the urine and blood to satisfy you and eliminate any possible fear. Vita Flex and color therapy may be used to advantage to stimulate the liver, pancreas, and spleen and thus insure proper use of the minerals supplied for diabetics. Many people with diabetes have found they no longer have need for insulin after the master cleanse. Diabetics must be sure to follow every detail of the recommended lemonade diet as explained in the following pages.
For the vegetarian detox diet, you just have to get rid of those vegetables that have high levels of carbohydrates including legumes, potatoes, and white pasta. Among the vegetables that you can include in your diet are broccoli, spinach, kale, and other dark, leafy vegetables as well as whole grains, eggs, nuts, and tofu as they contain only minimal amount of carbohydrates.
One gram of carbohydrates provides 4 calories. The current general recommendation is that carbohydrates should provide between 45 – 65% of the daily caloric intake. Carbohydrate intake should not fall below 130 grams/day.
The Master Cleanse is a dangerous fad diet for anyone, but especially bad for diabetics. Burroughs’ advice is medically unsound and very dangerous. Do not change your insulin dose, and never just stop taking insulin — especially while living on a very low-calorie diet of sugar water. The master cleanse is nutrient deficient, and lacks protein, fiber and healthy fat. If you have diabetes and go on the diet, you would experience hypoglycemia, including such symptoms as dizziness, the shakes, anxiety, mood swings, fatigue, headache and hunger.
Use a 9-inch plate. Put nonstarchy vegetables on half of the plate; a meat or other protein on one-fourth of the plate; and a grain or other starch on the last one-fourth. Starches include starchy vegetables such as corn and peas. You also may eat a small bowl of fruit or a piece of fruit, and drink a small glass of milk as included in your meal plan.
Tuna salad: Mix 3 oz water-packed tuna with 2 stalks chopped celery, 4 chopped green olives, and 1 tsp regular (or1 T reduced-fat mayonnaise). Add 1 Tbsp seasoned rice vinegar, if desired. Scoop tuna onto 2 c mixed dark greens, and top with 1 Tbsp chopped almonds. Serve with 1 oz 100% whole grain crackers.
Blueberries are part of the family of fruits containing flavonoids, known for their many health benefits, including heart health. In addition, blueberries’ high fiber content may reduce the risk of diabetes and cognitive decline, and help keep blood sugar more level, says Joanne M. Gallivan, MS, RD, director of the National Diabetes Education Program at the National Institutes of Health. “Recent studies have also shown that berries have an anticancer effect by inhibiting tumor growth and decreasing inflammation,” Gallivan says.
Juicing can also help diabetics in ways that don’t involve insulin production, regulation, or the body’s metabolism and utilization of glucose. For example, juicing wheatgrass, barley grass or kelp won’t specifically regulate a diabetic’s insulin or improve glucose metabolism, but it can help lower the blood pressure. High blood pressure is a fairly common complication of diabetes, and juicing provides a natural way to help bring it under control.
Regardless of the route you go, your number one goal should be to cut added sugars from your diet. That includes most desserts, sugar-sweetened beverages and many processed foods or snacks. In general, men should consume no more than nine teaspoons, or about 36 grams of sugar per day, while women should eat no more than six teaspoons, or about 25 grams, of added sugars per day, according to the American Heart Association. In other words, it’s time to start reading nutrition labels.
If your goal is to detox your system, don’t waste your time or money. Your body is an expert at getting rid of toxins no matter what you eat. Toxins don’t build up in your liver, kidneys, or any other part of your body, and you’re not going to get rid of them with the latest detox wonder. Especially avoid diets that promise to detox your liver with supplements or “cleanse” whatever the diet determines needs washing out.
Fruits and Sugar. Sugars are included within the total carbohydrate count in the exchange lists. Sugars should not be more than 10% of daily carbohydrates. Each exchange contains about 15 grams of carbohydrates for a total of 60 calories.

There is a reason why people who are under stress usually eat junk food. You should know that stress raises the cortisol level, which stimulates fat storage and causes hunger. However, de-stressing can reverse the whole process above mentioned.
Even modest weight loss can reduce the risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. There are many approaches to dieting and many claims for great success with various fad diets. They include calorie restriction, low-fat/high-fiber, or high protein and fat/low carbohydrates.
Beta glucan: contains soluble fibers that help to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the elevation in blood glucose levels by delaying gastric emptying so that dietary sugar is absorbed more gradually. Beta glucan is found in the cell walls of baker’s yeast, grains (e.g. oat bran, barley bran, oat/rye sprouts) and mushrooms (e.g. maitake, reishi, shiitake).
Ctinkam – I wasn’t specifically trying to lose weight when I did the detox, I was trying to improve my fasting blood glucose numbers. However, I have heard that many “diets” stop working after 3-4 weeks because your body adapts to your new way of eating and your metabolism slows down. You might want to move to the Basic Plan discussed in the book where you start to slowly reintroduce gluten-free grains, low glycemic fruits, and starchy vegetables. Give your body foods it’s no longer used to processing, then do the more strict detox again. I have no idea if this will work, but it’s what I would try. (Please note I am not a medical professional.) Are you exercising? If you’re doing cardio, you might want to add strength training. If you’re lifting weights, add yoga. Just do something different physically. That should help fire up your metabolism too. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yes, that’s right. Unlimited carbs. Did you know that vegetables are carbs? And you get to eat as much as you want. Unlimited refills! There is one catch. I only mean the non-starchy veggies such as greens, the broccoli family (cauliflower, kale, collards, etc.), asparagus, green beans, mushrooms, onions, zucchini, tomatoes, fennel, eggplant, artichokes, peppers, etc. What’s out are potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash and beets — just for 10 days. Also skip grains and beans for 10 days. It supercharges the results so you lose weight and feel great.
As you journey through your detox diet, you’ll likely find that simple changes such as drinking more fluids or eating more vegetables can have a profound effect on your daily wellbeing. Taking 200 micrograms of chromium picolinate three times daily with meals can help improve insulin sensitivity. A review published in Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics evaluated 13 studies that reported significant improvement in glycemic control and substantial reductions in hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia after patients used chromium picolinate supplementation. Other positive outcomes from supplementing with chromium picolinate included reduced cholesterol and triglyceride levels and reduced requirements for hypoglycemic medication. (12)

Need another reason to fit more spinach into your meal plan? The American Diabetes Association (ADA) reported on a study to determine whether eating more fruits and veggies can lower the risk of developing diabetes. The answer? People who ate more green leafy vegetables (including spinach in particular) reduced their chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 14 percent. Despite some limitations of the study, the ADA’s takeway was this: “People who want to lower their chances for developing diabetes should consider eating more green leafy vegetables.”
