Start with realistic goals. When overweight people achieve even modest weight loss they reduce risk factors in the heart. Ideally, overweight patients should strive for 7% weight loss or better, particularly people with type 2 diabetes.

Planning is key to preventing hypoglycemia. For instance, if you take insulin, your health care provider might suggest you take less insulin or eat a small snack with carbohydrates before, during, or after physical activity, especially intense activity.4

Technically, an avocado is a fruit, but because of its high fat content — 4 grams in 1/4 of a medium-size avocado — it should be treated like a fat. That same serving of avocado contains a respectable 2 grams of fiber with just 2 carb grams.

To determine the daily calorie requirements for specific individuals, multiply the number of pounds of ideal weight by 12 – 15 calories. The number of calories per pound depends on gender, age, and activity levels. For instance a 50-year-old moderately active woman who wants to maintain a weight of 135 pounds and is mildly active might need only 12 calories per pound (1,620 calories a day). As with any change in diet, it is recommended that before beginning the cleanse & detox you check with your doctor. If you are allergic to any ingredients do not include them in your cleanse.  You may use an alternative.

Soluble fiber requires water to help dissolve, so people who increase their levels of soluble fiber should drink more water.

Ctinkam – I wasn’t specifically trying to lose weight when I did the detox, I was trying to improve my fasting blood glucose numbers. However, I have heard that many “diets” stop working after 3-4 weeks because your body adapts to your new way of eating and your metabolism slows down. You might want to move to the Basic Plan discussed in the book where you start to slowly reintroduce gluten-free grains, low glycemic fruits, and starchy vegetables. Give your body foods it’s no longer used to processing, then do the more strict detox again. I have no idea if this will work, but it’s what I would try. (Please note I am not a medical professional.) Are you exercising? If you’re doing cardio, you might want to add strength training. If you’re lifting weights, add yoga. Just do something different physically. That should help fire up your metabolism too. Good luck and keep us posted.

Tuna salad: Mix 3 oz water-packed tuna with 2 stalks chopped celery, 4 chopped green olives, and 1 tsp regular (or1 T reduced-fat mayonnaise). Add 1 Tbsp seasoned rice vinegar, if desired. Scoop tuna onto 2 c mixed dark greens, and top with 1 Tbsp chopped almonds. Serve with 1 oz 100% whole grain crackers.

During a cleanse or anytime a fruited leafy green salad with some berries and nuts on top is a great way to start your day. I enjoy this dish topped with unsweetened, homemade greek yogurt, and if I am going to be doing something physically demanding I will enjoy some additional fruit and/or good ole fashion oatmeal or some other great grain dish. Monounsaturated fatty acids (found in olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, nuts, and avocados) and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (found in fish, shellfish, flaxseed, and walnuts) should be the first choice for fats.
